After All

“Dark earth, black water and dense greenery form the backdrop against which this narrative dance unfolds. But above all, After All is an ode to the beauty of dance: in an intriguing and comforting way, the individual dancers repeatedly merge with the group choreography, subtly accentuating the theme of finding each other in a lost world. Even the water serves as a stage, which is ingenious, even there the dancers dance.”

Wildfires, floods, a collapsing glacier. We push the earth to its limit and deplete it, knowing all too well that one day it will come to an end. Despite the clear signals that change is needed, very little is happening. Of course, we’re all making concessions: solar panels adorn our rooftops and there’s less and less meat in our refrigerators. Nevertheless, the earth continues to warm and the clock continues to tick. The human thirst for comfort seems too strong, even in anticipation of the end of the world.

We often enough imagine how it will come to pass: a deafening bang as the earth suddenly falls away from underneath you or a blazing inferno that engulfs us all at once. A big event that puts a stop to everything. But what remains when the storm has calmed? When the grit has settled, will life creep up again?

After All is set in the bleak reality after the world as we know it has ceased to exist. In this thirty-minute dance performance, four characters struggle with the sudden shift from abundance to scarcity and with feelings of guilt, loss and loneliness.

This work premiered in May 2023 at Karavaan Festival. You can find the full list of planned performances here.

“The choreographically fascinating After All is about reality after the apocalypse; what do we do when everything we know is gone?

The movements of the talented dancers are alternately graceful and animalistic.”
